Some people picture the Earth as a beautiful blue jewel sailing through Space. The pictures taken from the Space Shuttle are certainly beautiful, but there are some disturbing images too. Environmental damage, such as the destruction of the Rain Forests, can be seen from space, and some of the problems that we face over the next few decades are pretty scary. "World Fact Book" Click here for un-to-date information about Countries around the world. This is useful if you are researching countries for the Global Issues unit, or trying to find out about countries which feature in your research on an environmental issue. The Church of England's Views on the Environment The Church of England operates an excellent website - it gives details of the Church's views on a range of Personal, Social and Global issues. Click here to see the entire site. Greenpeace Greenpeace are famous for their campaigns to prevent damage to the environment. In particular they have been involved in preventing the dumping of nuclear waste at sea, and in protests about Genetically Modified crops. The World Wildlife Fund The WWF are one of the most important organisations that work to prevent the destruction of the world's wildlife. They monitor endangered species and promote research into breeding programmes. Christian Ecology Link This is a Charity that campaigns about Environmental issues - the site is a bit complicated to follow (there are a lot of official reports), but there is a lot of useful information. Look at the list of topics on the left hand side of the page. Friends of the Earth FoE are similar to Greenpeace - they campaign to prevent damage to the Environment. If you are working on Mrs Dixon's Environment project, you might be looking for information about Landfill - click here for a special report. Christian Aid Follow this link to the organisation that represents the Churches of the UK in action in the Developing World. They have a webiste specifically for students who are researching the Developing World - click here to go to the Global Gang Website. CAFOD CAFOD is a Roman Catholic Charity, working in similar areas to Oxfam and Christian Aid. MuslimAid All major religions have rules concerning Charity - in Islam it is one of the five important parts of the Religion. To find out more about Muslims, try the Islam page. Painley School Development Links Painsley School is a Roman Catholic High School - this is a link to their Development page. The Biodiversity Centre This site is run by "Defenders of Wildlife". It includes information on Endangered Species and conservation programmes. Endangered Species Program This comes from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It explains how the American Government deals with Endangered Species. The National Geographic This magazine has been running for over a century - it features articles about Exploration, Geography and Ecology. Visit it simply for the breathtaking photographs! Rainforests Thanks to a Year Nine Passport student, who found this site while researching for his Environment project, I have added this site to the page. Click on it to find out about the destruction of one of the planet's most important features. Animal Rights Be Warned - many campaigners use very disturbing pictures in their campaigns. Also, some of the comments and quotations can be upsetting. Be careful as you research this issue. The Royal Society for the Protection of Animals Probably the best known organisation campaigning for Animal Rights in the UK, the RSPCA is best known for its work bringing prosecutions for cruelty to animals, and for its opposition to hunting for sport. The Countryside Alliance In the recent debate about Fox Hunting, the Countryside Alliance claims to represent people living in the countryside, and to support their right to hunt. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals This organisation is famous for its anti-fur fashion campaigns. It has also run campaigns about conditions in farms. Fur Farming - a BBC report The BBC reported on the Fur Trade in this report from 1999. Fur Farming Farming animals for their skins is thought by many to be morally wrong. This site is operated by the International Fur Trade Federation, and puts the Fur Industry's point of view across. The Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade This puts the opposing point of view.
