Euthanasia literally means "Good Death". It is the term given to the idea that when a person is terminally ill, or in intolerable pain, the kindest thing to do would be to allow them to die with dignity rather than to kinger on in pain.

There are two approaches to Euthanasia.
  • Passive Euthanasia - where no treatment is given that would prolong life. The patient is simply allowed to die in peace.
  • Active Euthanasia - where someone does something that brings about the death of the patient. This might be an overdose, or some other form of assisted suicide.

Some people have proposed a different approach to dignity in death. Dame Cecily Saunders founded the first hospice in Sout East London, and now there are Hospice foundations around the country. They aim to provide Palliative Care for the terminally ill. Instead of trying to cure the disease, or end the patient's life prematurely, the staff in a hospice aim to control the pain and indignity of the disease, and to support the patient and relatives as they prepare for death and bereavement.
