The Nature of
God Images of Jesus The course includes a unit of work on Jesus Christ. One of the lessons involves looking at the way that Jesus has been protrayed in art over the centuries - this is the site that we use for the lesson on Images of Christ. There are other sites to look at, too. The Discovery Channel has a page of Images of Christ to support a series of Programmes on Jesus. Click here to see their collection. The Face is a stunning site using Flash to present some moving images of Jesus. Click here to visit the site. Click here for some striking modern images of Jesus. Luc Freymann has a site which features hundreds of original pictures of Jesus. Click here to view his artwork. Icons The Greek and Russian Churches have developed a remarkable style of Religious Art. The icon is thought of as a window on heaven - the style has become popular recently as decorative art, but in the Orthodox Churches they are used as part of worship and prayer. The Historical Jesus This is a page from the BBC's news service, describing the TV Series about the different ideas about Jesus. The article describes Jeremy Bowen's ideas about Jesus, and his reflections on the way that beliefs have developed over the years. See the programme details (and a description of the programme contents), click here. The Nature of Belief BBC Architecture Quiz Te BBC History site includes this excellent Flash quiz, based on Bristol Cathedral. It's an ideal way to explore the architecture of some of Britain's greatest buildings, and also to find out more about the way that the buildings themselves support worship. You'll need Macromedia Flash plug-in for this - click here for more details BBC History - Ely Cathedral The BBC History site also includes this excellent introduction to Ely Cathedral. You can also take an on-line tour of Kirtling parish church in Cambridgeshire - click here. There's a link to Ely Cathedral's own website on the TSAS-RE Christianity page. Click here to go there. Cathedral Architecture This site gives you a useful introduction to Cathedrals and the wat that they are built. Mystery Worshipper "Ship of Fools" is an on-line magazine for Christians, though it isn't what you might expect! For example, they have a "Mystery Worshipper" column, where people attend services at Churches throughout the world, and then describe the experience. Follow the link to a list of British Cathedrals visited by "Mystery Worshippers" and read about the way that these great buildings develop an atmosphere in which worship can take place. To see what the Mystery Worshipper thought of our own Norwich Cathedral, click here. The TSAS-RE Places of Worship Links There are a huge number of Churches with their own websites - many are featured on the TSAS-RE Christianity page. Follow the link straight to the list - many of these sites are essential when you begin to look at the way that architecture supports believers' worship! Walsingham This small village near Fakenham is an enormously popular place of pilgrimage. It is also the destination for your Coursework Field Trip. Find out more about the Shrine of Our Lady by visiting its website. Science and Religion TSAS-RE Environment Page Part of the Religion and Science page involves a look at Environmental Issues. The TSAS-RE page has a range of sites, including Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace! Use the site to research the Funeral Service. Not all the links work, but it is well worth a visit anyway! Church of England's Funeral Pages The Church of England's website is a treasure trove of information about the Church's beliefs and practices. Euthanasia This link takes you to the TSAS-RE Euthanasial page. It includes:
War Peace and Justice Pax Christi "Pax Christi" is latin for "The Peace of Christ". It is the name of an organisation that campaigns for peace and argues for non-violent conclusions to conflicts and national disagreements. The Peace Pledge Union The Peace Pledge Union was founded by Dick Sheppard, a popular vicar in Central London, in 1934. The Union offers a huge range of resources for researching a Christian Response to War and Conflict. Please remember that although Mahatma Ghandi was a well-known Pacifist, he was not a Hindu. While you can read about him, and write about his non-violent direct action, remember that if your exam question requires a Christian response the examiners may not credit information about Ghandi. Clergy protest against war on Iraq The BBC ran this news story in August 2002. It explains the response of churchmen in Britain to the threat of war with Iraq. Read some of the comments made by visitors to the BBC News Website here. Religion and Equality TSAS-RE Racism page The TSAS-RE Racism page has links to organisations that campaign against racism. Bishop John Sentamu Archbishop Sentamu is the Archbishop of York, and the second most senior bishop in the Church of England. This story is about his appointment as the Anglican Bishop of Birmingham. He is the first senior black Bishop in the CofE to be appointed, and is a prominent speaker against Racism. This link takes you to the BBC News Website page that announced his appointment. He has made some important contributions on the issue of Asylum Seekers - click here to read more on that story. The Stephen Lawrence Murder Stephen Lawrence was murdered by racist thugs in 1993 in Eltham, SE London. Use this link to begin to research the story of his murder, and of the investigation that followed. Women Priests - the Danvers Statement We use this statement in our lesson on Women Priests - see the text here. Forward in Faith Many members of the Church of England are still opposed to the Ordination of Women even though there are women priests in the Church. Forward in Faith is an organisation that supports their views. Read about their reasons for objecting to the Ordination of Women here. The Council for Biblical Equality Some Christians claim that the Bible argues against Women being Priests in the Church. This website argues that the Bible in fact supports the idea that Women and Men are equal. Roman Catholic Views on Women Priests The Roman Catholic Church does not ordain women as priests, but does have a large number of women working within the church. Some of its teachers and theologians are arguing that the Roman Catholic Church should ordain women. Click here to find out more. We have found some other schools' websites to be useful - scroll down to see more links!
