Nelson Mandela

For many years, South Africa was ruled by a government that stopped the black population from enjoying equal rights with white people. After campaigning against this system (known as Apartheid), Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison. After his release, and the end of Apartheid, he was elected as South Africa's first black president.
