For many years, South Africa was ruled by a government that stopped the black population from enjoying equal rights with white people. Bishop Tutu was made Archbishop of Capetown, and the most important bishop in South Africa. He campaigned tirelessly for the abolition of "apartheid" (the name the government gave to the laws that kept the black population separate from white people), and for the release of his friend Nelson Mandela from prison.
