The Year Seven course has three units. The first is Festivals - click for links to sites that will give you inside information on major celebrations throughout the year. The second unit looks at the great Heroes and Leaders that provide role models for many people. You'll study the lives of the great religious leaders such as Mohammed (p.b.u.h.) and Guru Nanak, as well as famous modern leaders like Martn Luther King and Mother Teresa. Finally you'll look at the great Creation stories, and at the way these stories affect the way people regard the Environment.

Festivals

Festival Calendar
RE Teachers have been able to find out the dates of a wide range of Religious Festivals using the "Shap Calendar". Now it's available for students to use on-line. Follow this link to see the dates of Festivals throughout 2002!

Christmas
This site allows you to find out about the ways that Christmas is celebrated around the World.

The Kumbh Mela
The Kumbh Mela took place in January in Northern India. It attracted up to 70 million people - so many that astronauts in space could see the crowd! - to the banks of the Ganges river. The official site will give you background information and images. There is also this site which also has plenty of information and pictures of the Kumbh. Channel 4's website accompanies its television programmes - there were daily live reports from the Kumbh, with interviews and features. This site is run by a Professor of Religious Studies at Southwest Missouri State University.

Divali
This site is dedicated to the celebration of Divali. You'll find recipes for traditional foods, and even screensavers and e-Divali cards! You might have been asked to act out some of the stories associated with Divali. The best known is Rama and Sita (remember the Tweenies video???), though there are other stories too. Click here to read some of the stories. Check with the Shap calendar for the date of Divali in 2001 - Click Here to visit their site.

Durga Puja Greetings
I've been asked to include this site by its owners - it offers free "e-cards" to send greetings on various Hindu Festivals. You can also find some cards for other religious festivals.

Ramadan
Click here to research the Muslim month of Fasting.

Creation and the Environment

The Big Myth
This is a stunning website. It uses Flash Animation to explain a huge number of myths about the Creation of the World. Use the map to select a myth, and find out how various cultures have explained the origins of life and of the planet! Remember that a myth is a story that is told to explain a mystery - calling a story a myth does not necessarily mean that the story is fictitious!

Greenpeace
Greenpeace are famous for their campaigns to prevent damage to the environment. In particular they have been involved in preventing the dumping of nuclear waste at sea, and in protests about Genetically Modified crops. The main link is to Greenpeace International. For Greenpeace UK click here

The World Wildlife Fund
The WWF are one of the most important organisations that work to prevent the destruction of the world's wildlife. They monitor endangered species and promote research into breeding programmes.

Christian Ecology Link
This is a Charity that campaigns about Environmental issues - the site is a bit complicated to follow (there are a lot of official reports), but there is a lot of useful information. Look at the list of topics on the left hand side of the page.

Friends of the Earth
FoE are similar to Greenpeace - they campaign to prevent damage to the Environment.

Christian Aid
Follow this link to the organisation that represents the Churches of the UK in action in the Developing World. They have a webiste specifically for students who are researching the Developing World - click here to go to the Global Gang Website.

CAFOD
CAFOD is a Roman Catholic Charity, working in similar areas to Oxfam and Christian Aid.

MuslimAid
All major religions have rules concerning Charity - in Islam it is one of the five important parts of the Religion. To find out more about Muslims, try the Islam page.

Painley School Development Links
Painsley School is a Roman Catholic High School - this is a link to their Development page.

The Biodiversity Centre
This site is run by "Defenders of Wildlife". It includes information on Endangered Species and conservation programmes.

Endangered Species Program
This comes from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It explains how the American Government deals with Endangered Species.

The National Geographic
This magazine has been running for over a century - it features articles about Exploration, Geography and Ecology. Visit it simply for the breathtaking photographs!

Rainforests
Thanks to a Year Nine Passport student, who found this site while researching for his Environment project, I have added this site to the page. Click on it to find out about the destruction of one of the planet's most important features.

Leaders

From time to time, you will have to research the life or sayings of someone who has worked for the rights of other human beings. This may be in the unit on "Founders and Leaders" in Year 7, or in the Personal and Social unit in Year 9. I have found the following links to be useful - click on the name of the one you want to research.

If you find any other sites that you think might be useful, please let me know!

Nelson Mandela
The former President of South Africa.

Bishop Desmond Tutu
A former Archbishop of Capetown, friend of Nelson Mandela, and tireless campaigner against apartheid.

Mother Teresa
Famous as the nun who cared for "untouchable" homeless people in Calcutta.

Dr Martin Luther King
The American Civil Rights Leader who campaigned for equal rights for Black people in the USA.
